Ghosting Is the New Black

Ghosting Is the New Black

Why Modern Dating Rewards Disappearing Acts and Emotional Unavailability

We now live in a dating culture where people can explain attachment theory for forty-five minutes but still cannot send: "Hey, I don't think we're a match." The digital age has made it easier than ever to disappear without explanation. Ghosting has become normalized, almost expected. It's the modern breakup — one where there is no actual break, just a slow fade into silence.

I've had clients come to me devastated. Not because the relationship ended. Because they never found out it had. They were sitting there, waiting, checking their phone, making excuses for the silence. "He's busy." "She travels for work." "The timing is bad." And then weeks later, they finally say it out loud: he's not coming back. She stopped responding.

The cruelty isn't intentional in most cases. That almost makes it worse. People ghost because it's easier than a conversation. Because they don't want to see someone hurt. Because they've convinced themselves that disappearing is somehow kinder than the truth. It isn't. Silence doesn't spare anyone pain — it just transfers it entirely to the other person, plus interest.

What I find most interesting is what ghosting reveals about the person doing it. Not their cruelty. Their fear. The inability to say "this isn't working for me" is a profound failure of emotional maturity. And yet, the culture rewards it. Apps make it easy. There are always more matches. Why have a hard conversation when you can just swipe again?

The people I work with are older. They've been through things. They don't have time for this. And yet they're experiencing it too — ghosted after six dates, after three months, after what felt like genuine intimacy. It's disorienting at any age. At 55, it's insulting.

My advice is always the same: don't chase the ghost. They already told you everything you need to know — not with their silence, but with their inability to show up for a simple, adult conversation. That's not the partner you want. Let them disappear.
