Life Is a Bottle of Variety Club Pop
Not a bad return on $15.37.
My dad handed me a collection of old Variety Club bottles and said:
"Save these. They'll be worth something someday."
So I did the math.
Today they're worth about $15.00.
In another 15 years, they'll be worth about $15.37.
In another 30 years, maybe $15.69.
At this rate, my descendants will be fighting over a twenty-dollar inheritance.
It got me thinking.
Variety Club came in all kinds of flavors.
Grape pop.
Orange pop.
Red pop.
Cola.
As a matchmaker, I've learned people do too.
Tall women.
Short women.
Quiet women.
Talkative women.
Dog people.
Cat people.
Some matches fizzled out before the bottle was opened.
Some fell flat.
Some lasted a few months.
And some lasted a lifetime.
Maybe that's why the bottles were never really worth $15.37.
The value was never in the bottle.
It was in the memories attached to it.
Just like the people.
Just like the dates.
Just like life.
Not a bad return on $15.37.
